Type 1
It occurs with younger population (below age of 30) and
mostly in puberty. The root
cause is autoimmune process which destroys betta cells of
pancreas, which, as a result, lacks insuline in blood and hyperglicemia. As the
patient becomes a life-time dependent on insuline, this type is also called
insuline-dependent.
Type 2
Type 2 is also known as the
insuline independent. It occurs as a consequence of various
abnormalities on the periphery tissue and constitutes 90% of cases.
Patients
who suffer from this type are older than 40 yrs (the highest incidence
is between 65 and 74) and most of them are overweight. They do not
require insuline to survive but as in time insuline secretion is
reduced, they need insuline in order to reach optimal glycoregulation.
